La satisfaction d&rsquo;avoir fait du bon travail le d\u00e9dommage amplement de ses peines. Bien embarrass\u00e9s mais aussi, pourquoi pas ? s\u00e9duits devant ces compositions o\u00f9 les apports des fauves et des cubistes ont \u00e9t\u00e9 si intelligemment utilis\u00e9s, o\u00f9 le go\u00fbt des tons chauds s&rsquo;allie \u00e0 celui de l&rsquo;architecture sans jamais, pour autant, conduire aux poncifs litt\u00e9raires.<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><em>On le sent passionn\u00e9 \u00e0 r\u00e9soudre ces deux probl\u00e8mes d&rsquo;importance primordiale.<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><em>Chaque fois, il leur trouve une solution satisfaisante. Ici, c&rsquo;est une sc\u00e8ne de cirque o\u00f9 le blanc des personnages, sous la lumi\u00e8re crue des projecteurs, s&rsquo;oppose aux jeux d&rsquo;ombres fantastiques; l\u00e0, ce sont \u00ab&nbsp;Les quatre saisons&nbsp;\u00bb, le \u00ab&nbsp;Jugement de P\u00e2ris&nbsp;\u00bb et bien d&rsquo;autres toiles encore o\u00f9 les lignes, \u00e0 travers une grande libert\u00e9 d&rsquo;ex\u00e9cution, s&rsquo;\u00e9quilibrent se prolongent, sur le plus agr\u00e9able des rythmes.<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><em>Ce go\u00fbt, cette passion des recherches architecturales qui se traduit aussi par des oppositions de plans et de volumes, s&rsquo;exprime encore par une mati\u00e8re souvent profond\u00e9ment travaill\u00e9e. Ce n&rsquo;est point le cas. La passion des lignes, &#8211; et quelques dessins t\u00e9moignent assez \u00e0 quel point l&rsquo;artiste s&rsquo;y soumet -, la recherche des plans color\u00e9s, ne brident nullement l&rsquo;inspiration d&rsquo;Henry-G\u00e9rard. Au contraire.<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><em>Chacune de ses compositions, chacun de ses nus est mieux qu&rsquo;une exp\u00e9rience, c&rsquo;est une \u0153uvre achev\u00e9e qui a son caract\u00e8re propre, son style plus ou moins d\u00e9pouill\u00e9, plus ou moins figuratif, puisqu&rsquo;il faut, h\u00e9las bien employer ce terme, mais qui, toujours provoque ce choc \u00e9motif sans lequel il n&rsquo;est pas de v\u00e9ritable \u0153uvre d&rsquo;art. Des \u0153uvres qui sont celles d&rsquo;un artiste sinc\u00e8re, honn\u00eate, en pleine possession de son m\u00e9tier et qui dit bien ce qu&rsquo;il a \u00e0 dire. Henry G\u00e9rard, en effet, expose pour la premi\u00e8re fois \u00e0 Paris. Ce qui ne signifie pas qu&rsquo;il en soit \u00e0 ses d\u00e9buts. Bien au contraire. Seulement il a attendu d&rsquo;\u00eatre en pleine possession de son m\u00e9tier pour sortir de sa retraite du Midi o\u00f9 il travaillait silencieusement, depuis des ann\u00e9es.<\/p>\r\n<p>Il fut \u00e0 ses d\u00e9buts l&rsquo;un des meilleurs \u00e9l\u00e8ves de Souverbie. Aujourd\u2019hui, s&rsquo;il ne renie pas son ma\u00eetre, Henry G\u00e9rard a, cependant, trouv\u00e9 un mode d&rsquo;expression bien personnel.<\/p>\r\n<p>Apr\u00e8s avoir go\u00fbt\u00e9 du cubisme et de l&rsquo;\u00e9cole fauve, il a su s&rsquo;en assimiler la substantifique moelle pour arriver \u00e0 une \u00e9criture bien \u00e0 lui. Une \u00e9criture qui t\u00e9moigne avant tout d&rsquo;une recherche passionn\u00e9e des lignes et de la couleur.<\/p>\r\n<p>Sur un fond longuement pr\u00e9par\u00e9, les lignes courent, se prolongent sur le plus agr\u00e9able des rythmes, d\u00e9limitant des plans color\u00e9s qui s&rsquo;opposent, se compl\u00e8tent pour former de savantes harmonies.<\/p>\r\n<p>Il puise ses sujets aussi bien dans la vie quotidienne; au cirque par exempte, que dans son imagination. L&rsquo;orchestration des couleurs, le jeu des volumes et des lignes expressives, de ce peintre de l&rsquo;humain dont les compositions originales ne manqueront pas d\u2019exciter l&rsquo;int\u00e9r\u00eat.<\/p>\r\n<p>L&rsquo;un des m\u00e9rites d\u2019Henry-G\u00e9rard qui, il y a une quinzaine d\u2019ann\u00e9es, re\u00e7ut les conseils de Souverbie, est d&rsquo;avoir voulu travailler en solitaire, loin de Paris, sans monter \u00e0 personne le r\u00e9sultat de ses recherches. Aussi l&rsquo;\u0153uvre qu\u2019il expose aujourd\u2019hui pour la premi\u00e8re fois \u00e0 la galerie Drouant-David est-elle proprement surprenante.
